The last month of the year is upon us; I hope you have had a good year. I certainly have, with lots of projects bearing fruit and with lots more planned for 2024. It was the first year I shot over 110,000 photos and attended plenty of events that I still think I have been lucky to attend.

Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park – 1st till 31st
Hyde Park is back for its 16th year; this annual event has the biggest outdoor rink in the UK, plus circuses and rides galore, plus plenty of Christmas market stalls. There are also ice sculpting workshops and a German-style Bavarian Village with live music.

Christmas Mexican Market, Coal Drop Yard – 1st till 3rd
Hosted by Coal Drops Yard restaurants, Casa Pastor and Plaza Pastor, the Mexican Christmas Market returns for another year, offering artisanal Mexican clothing, accessories, ornaments and craftworks from independent artists and designers. This is the ideal opportunity to find a Mexican-inspired gift for a loved one this Christmas.

Land of Lights, Milton Keynes – 1st till 25th February 2024
Following a spectacular first season for Land of Lights Milton Keynes, we’re excited to bring the festival back for 2023. Look forward to a brand-new trail featuring 12 incredible worlds inspired by legendary fairytales and iconic characters. See classic tales in a whole new light!

Eel Pie Island, London – 2nd till 3rd
Eel Pie Island is situated in the tidal Thames in west London and is home to a variety of artists’ studios along with working boatyards and private dwellings. For two weekends a year, it is open to the public.

The Luminaze – 2nd till 2nd January 2024
Wander through The Luminaze and get lost in its neon lights and art installations. This winter, a brand-new light-based interactive maze is heading to Wembley Park to wow visitors of all ages.

Gingerbread City, London – 2nd till 7th January
Discover a whole city constructed entirely from gingerbread, candy, and frosting. Marvel at the moving trains and twirling parts built by over 50+ architects and designers. Perfect to get you into the holiday mood!

Christmas Watford Market – 3rd
Eat, drink and be merry at Watford’s Festive Sunday Market. To get the town into the festive spirit, the market will be hosting craft stalls and produce. Explore a wide variety of stalls featuring everything from artisanal gifts to festive treats.

Christmas Wreath Workshop in Cassiobury Park – 3rd
Join Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust at Cassiobury Park to make a beautiful Christmas Wreath for your front door; we’ll even have holly from our own reserves to include. The workshop is aimed at adults. All instructions and materials will be provided, and you will create a 12-inch wreath. Booking is required and costs £45 per person.

Christmas Tree, Trafalgar Square – 7th
The traditional tree from Norway gets lit up on the 7th, which is always the first Thursday in December. This will be the 76th tree from the people of Norway to light up the square. The tree is in gratitude for Britain’s support for Norway during World War II. Join the Mayor of London and

Miracle on Leake Street, the FREE event that sees London’s longest graffiti tunnel transformed into the Capital’s alternative festive celebration!

Aldgate in Winter festival – 8th
Aldgate in Winter Festival returns for its seventh year! An evening of music, dance, light, and celebration. A lantern parade, live performances on The Aldgate Stage, The Community Feast, creative workshops and more.

Kingdom of Winter Festival – 8th till 7th January 2024
Journey to the Kingdom of Winter – London’s exciting new destination for festive fun at ExCeL London. This is London’s only indoor festive experience designed with all the convenience that families need to make a perfect day out.

Christmas Independent Ceramics Market – 11th
Christmas Independent Ceramics Market takes place over four floors of Rich Mix Arts Centre, Tower Hamlets. Independent Ceramics Market provides a unique opportunity to see/buy a diverse range of affordable ceramic artwork, and buy direct from the maker. This event brings together a community of over 100 ceramic artists, including current students, up-and-coming graduates, and established ceramicists from various ceramic studios both within the UK and Europe, making it the ideal location for discovering a new clay wave of early career and some more established ceramic artists.

London International Horse Show at ExCeL – 13th to 18th
The London International Horse Show at ExCeL is the only UK show to host all three FEI World CupTM Qualifiers in Dressage, Show Jumping and Driving. Each performance includes an equestrian competition along with a variety of displays from around the world.

Geminid meteor shower in Cassiobury Park – 14th
Bring a flask and a deck chair and watch the celestial light show. Or if you have a camera with a tripod, take some photographs of the night sky. The Geminid meteor shower happens every year in winter and can be pretty spectacular. The peak display is between the 14th & 15th of December; there could be around 100 an hour.

Colour Walk Meetup at Spitalfields Market – 21st
It is an informal gathering of colourful, creative souls who meet, dressed in their finest, to walk, talk and strut their stuff. Excellent for photography.

Peter Pan Cup, The Serpentine – 25th
The Serpentine Swimming Club’s Christmas morning handicap is swum over a 100 yard course for the Peter Pan Cup.  This is a race strictly for Serpentine Swimming Club members only (people cannot just turn up on the day and swim), though spectators are welcome.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks in London – 31st
Celebrate the new year in London with the annual spectacular fireworks display. This is a ticketed event, and prices this year have gone up to £20. The next lot of tickets will go online soon.

Christmas at Kew Gardens – till 7th January 2024
The annual light display is back. It’s a botanical world brimming with seasonal cheer as twinkling lights and seasonal sounds fill the air. Discover glittering tunnels of light, dancing lakeside reflections and trees drenched in jewel-like colour.

Contemporary African Photography at the Tate Modern, London – till 14th January 2024
A celebration of the varied landscape of contemporary African photography today. Bringing together a group of artists from different generations, this exhibition will address how photography, film, audio, and more have been used to reimagine Africa’s diverse cultures and historical narratives.

Sarah Lucas Happy Gas at Tate Britain – till 14th January 2024
A British artist’s brash and tender exploration of what makes us human. Sarah Lucas is internationally celebrated for her bold and provocative use of materials and imagery. Using ordinary objects in unexpected ways, she has consistently challenged our understanding of sex, class and gender over the last four decades.

Disney 100 exhibition at ExCeL – till 23 January 2024
Celebrate 100 wonderful years of Walt Disney magic at Disney100: The Exhibition in London, the largest exhibition created for the European tour. Step into the story of The Walt Disney Company and experience 100 years of magic through ten immersive themed galleries with innovative technology showcasing historical treasures, original artwork and props.

REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion, Design Museum – till 11th February 2024
Opening to coincide with London Fashion Week, this landmark exhibition will be one of the most wide-ranging surveys of contemporary fashion culture ever staged in the UK. It will offer an unprecedented look at how careers in fashion are forged and the multitude of opportunities London’s fashion scene offers young creatives.

Holbein at Tudor Court, Buckingham Palace – till 14th April 2024
Hans Holbein was one of the most talented artists of the 16th century.  From his arrival in England in search of work, he rose to royal favour, chosen to paint the portraits of Henry VIII, his family and leading figures, among them Anne Boleyn and Sir Thomas More. By his death, Holbein’s work was as admired by his contemporaries as it is today. His portraits inspired the next generation of artists in depicting Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I.
