Art on the London Underground

Last Sunday afternoon I went on a relaxing photo-walk discovering the art on the underground stations. Organised by Igerslondon in association with Transport for London. Below are some of my photographs taken on the walk, usually during the week you are mostly busy rushing through the stations. But it is a good idea to stop and take a look around if you have time. Art is all around you.

Also thanks to Igerslondon for choosing my photograph below as one of the the 5 best photos of the day. Thanks to transport for London for the prize 🙂

We started off at Tottenham Court Road where the new ticket hall has conceptual art by Daniel Burren. There are shapes and colours over the walls and glass.

Further into the station along the northern line and central line platforms are art from the artist Eduardo Paolozzi. The artist has interpreted the local area and their interest in mechanisation.

Next  station was Charing Cross where the art of David Gentleman called the “Cross of Eleanor” These are panels on the northern line platforms portraying the construction of the cross.

Further on to Embankment station where the artist Robyn Denny has geometric abstractions on all the platforms. Also there is bakerloo line tunnel shown below always good for photographs.

Onwards to Gloucester Road station where a suit of temporary exhibitions in the Victorian arches.

I love the old style of the station with its retro lights. A few photographs show this below.

Thanks to the underground staff we managed to get to places which are normally out of bounds.

The last stop was Edgware road station where the Jacqueline Poncelet wrapper which surrounds a TFL sub station.

It is Europe’s largest vitreous enamel artwork covering 1,500 sq metres.

Find out more about the art on the underground with lots of other art installations around the network. Some links are shown below plus my Flickr link which has more of the photographs I took on the day.

Once again thanks to Igerslondon who always organise fab walks around London and Transport for London for the art installations.
