Queen’s Jubilee Weather

Queen’s Jubilee Weather over the Platinum Jubilee Weekend 2022

As the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee approaches with the long bank holiday weekend, we can’t help but wonder what the weather will be like. We’ve all heard the stories about how bad the weather has been at previous Jubilees and Coronations, and it’s enough to make anyone a little nervous. Thunderstorms, lightning and hail, hit Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, and Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee was also plagued by bad weather. So what can we expect this time around? Only time will tell, but we’re crossing our fingers for some good old-fashioned British summer weather. Who knows, we might even get lucky and have a heatwave!

Scroll down further for the latest update on the weather for Platinum Jubilee.

Silver Jubilee, 1977

The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in 1977 were plagued by bad weather. A storm brought high winds and rain to London just days before the event, and on the day itself, the temperature was very cool, with strong winds and heavy downpours. Despite the weather, the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey went ahead as planned, but the rain returned afterwards. June 1977 was one of the coldest Junes of the twentieth century, making it a less than ideal time for an outdoor celebration. However, the Queen’s Jubilee was a success despite the inclement weather, thanks to the hard work of those involved in its organization. I remember having a street party during the jubilee in Watford, and you had to wear a coat. I must have been six at the time.

Golden Jubilee, 2002

The weather was much nicer for the Golden Jubilee, and it was sunny and warm. This allowed large crowds to gather in London to celebrate the occasion. There were very warm temperatures with hazy sunshine for much of the day, with a maximum temperature of 23c and high humidity.

Diamond Jubilee, 2012

The sun shone for the Diamond Jubilee, but it was unseasonable cold for the parade on Monday. The maximum temperature was 12c, you had to wrap up warm and bring a brolly. It was 5c below the long-term average for that part of the month.

Platinum Jubilee, 2022

We wait and see what the weather will be like for the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend! It’s a long bank holiday weekend from the 2nd to the 5th of June, 2022. The end of May bank holiday has been moved to the Thursday 2nd and an extra bank holiday added on the 3rd.

So what can we expect for the Queens Jubilee weather? The computer models (GFS) are currently showing warm weather at the beginning of June, but it is a long way off for the computer models to know, so everything can change. I will update this blog when it gets into the range for the higher resolution models. The long-range weather forecast isn’t that accurate; when it gets down to ten days, then you evaluate what the probability signals show.

Update 30/05/2022

The weather is now firming up to be changeable with showers especially later on in the south. It’s not going to be very warm 21c on Thursday and maybe 18 -19c till the 5th as easterly winds bring in a cool breeze; the next update is on the 31st of May for the Platinum Jubilee weekend 2022.

Thanks for reading, lookout out in the next few days for a blog on the events for photographers to capture this historical moment over the Platinum Jubilee Weekend. Plus, a blog on how London is getting ready for the Queen’s Jubilee weekend.
